#2: DWS: Put your money where your mouth should be!

Hey Debbie: Put your money where your mouth should be!

DavidNYC is back, taking Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz to task for her lack of support for progressive Dem Annette Taddeo and her implied support of  Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.  Below are excerpts form David's last two blog posts.  Take a minute to read them and then take action.

posted 8/6/08:  "take just a couple of minutes to call Debbie Wasserman Schultz's campaign office at (202) 257-3422 and ask that she give the same amount to Taddeo that she has to Joe Garcia and Raul Martinez, $2,500. All three are excellent candidates running competitive races in Debbie's back yard, and she should support all of them.

If you do call, please be polite and brief. Our message is simple and our cause is just. Also, please do not call Debbie's congressional office, as this is purely a political issue which staffers on the federal payroll cannot get involved with."

posted 8/5/08:  "it's up to us to stand up for a strong progressive like Annette Taddeo and send that message if Debbie won't. Taking on an incumbent Republican in a red district is always an uphill battle, and this race is no different. But if the progressive movement stands for anything, it's the principle that Democrats must never leave a worthy fellow Democrat behind.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz says, "I can't say enough good things about Ileana Ros-Lehtinen; she has been my friend since I was first elected to office." The netroots say, "Progressives will be lucky to have a friend like Annette Taddeo in Congress."

UPDATE:  It gets worse.  Check out this video of Mario Diaz Balart praising his "friends" DWS and Kendrick Meek.

#3: Stop the hypocrisy!

STOP THE HYPOCRISY!

from www.afterdowningstreet.org

Nancy Pelosi told "The View" that she'd impeach Bush if anybody knew of a crime he'd committed, just as she told Ed Schultz a year ago. Here's a list of crimes (PDF) drawn up by Conyers 2.5 years ago. And here's a list of crimes (PDF) from Kucinich's articles of impeachment drawn up by Elizabeth de la Vega.

Could a few thousand people fax these to her please? Fax: 202-225-8259, Phone: 202-225-0100, Email: AmericanVoices@mail.house.gov or sf.nancy@mail.house.gov

Bush has repeatedly instructed current and former staffers to refuse to comply with subpoenas and contempt citations.  Bush has violated numerous laws and claimed the right to do so in signing statements, as documented by the Government Accountability Office.

To watch a video of Bush admitting to violating FISA (thereby committing numerous felonies) go to the White House website here, and watch the December 19, 2005, press conference. You'll notice that Bush claims he began these crimes after September 11, 2001, which is not true; he began them earlier. You'll notice that Bush claims to have legal justification for violating the law, but those claims have completely collapsed. He also claims the spying is limited in ways that it is not. And when asked why he didn't try to change the law rather than violating it, he said he just doesn't have to because he's the president.

Also, does Pelosi subscribe to the belief that torture was ever legal?

#4: Reauthorization of the Children’s Trust

On Tuesday, Aug. 26 The Children's Trust will come before voters of Miami-Dade County for reauthorization through a referendum.

In 2002, voters passed The Children's Trust, opting for a final vote in 2006 to decide if they wanted the organization to be in perpetuity (just as it is in Broward and Palm Beach and other Florida counties).

Two quick and important facts: (1) The Children's Trust invests $100 million or more a year for early intervention and prevention. (2) It costs the median-assessed-value homeowner $61 a year.

Learn about the vote and how you can help

Making a case for the reauthorization of The Children's Trust

Our Uprising: Operation Muh Muh Muh My Sirota.

After a fantastic speaking event with David Sirota DFAM wants to get his syndicated column printed in the Miami Herald.  Here's where you can put your e-activism to use.  Send a letter to the Herald requesting they pick up David's column.  We've provided some good talking points below as well as the address to send the email letters.  This is our chance to hear a progressive voice and it gives more people an opportunity to engage in a dialogue long overdue in our community.

When you send your letter to the Herald bem sure to BCC (Blind CC) info(at)dfamiami(dot)com so we can keep track.

Miami Herald Info:  Letters must bear the writer's name, full address, and daytime phone number.
E-mail to both addresses: HeraldEd@MiamiHerald.com, & dwilson@MiamiHerald.com
Fax: (305) 376-8950 Mail: The Readers' Forum, The Miami Herald, One Herald Plaza, Miami, Florida 33132-1693

Talking points:  Why do you want the Herald to run David Sirota's Column

David offers a progressive voice and possesses journalistic integrity. We believe there is more to progressive politics than the Presidential campaign and David is known for his outstanding reporting on political corruption, globalization and working-class economic issues.

David has been published in the nation's leading news papers, including: The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Oregonian, The Hartford Courant, The Baltimore Sun, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Nation, The Washington Monthly, In These Times and The American Prospect.

More than 1.6 million people read his column. He's syndicated all over the country, and if the Florida panhandle and 1-4 corridor can read his column in their papers, then Miami-Dade, which has more registered Democrats than both areas combined, should be able to as well.

Here is a short list of some of the publications that run his column weekly and/or regularly:

Alternet, Credo Action, The Denver Post, The Idaho Post Register, The Idaho Statesman, In These Times, The Jackson Hole Daily News, The Lancaster Eagle Gazette, The Ocala Star-Banner, The Panama City News Herald, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Seattle Times, TruthDig

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and in a position to take the hearing on 7/25 seriously.  We know she is not happy about the Bush administration claiming executive privilege concerning Karl Rove and others' non-appearances before the Committee.  Her staff has said in the past that they don't hear from pro-impeachment voters from South Florida.  Please call Debbie and the others on the list below and tell them you favor impeachment hearings and you want them to hold the Bush administration accountable:

#10: Call your Rep about Safety for Children's Toys Bill

Posted: Sunday, July 06, 2008
Source: notinmycart.org
http://www.dfamiami.com/actionitem.asp?ActionItemId=41

You have the power THIS WEEK to directly impact what happens in Washington.

A strong product safety bill is under attack right now from industry, and your federal lawmakers are home for the July 4th holiday to hear what voters really want them to do. Your calls, letters and visits for safer products got us this far. Please take a few minutes to help us cross the finish line.

Use your power NOW to call their local offices and tell them to protect your family from unsafe products and lead-laden toys.

Your phone call will put your elected officials on notice that you want a product safety bill that will require:

testing standards for ALL toys before they reach store shelves;
public information about product complaints and problems; and
states' rights to pass stronger safety standards when new problems arise.
A record number of unsafe products and lead-tainted toys were recalled last year. With no new legislation yet, we're on pace to break that record this year.

We'll give you talking points and connect you using an easy 1-800 number.

Industry lobbyists have their ear -- help us make sure they hear from real people who buy these products. This effort has taken nearly a year now. With constant pressure from you--lawmakers made product safety a priority, but the final details at the end of the process can make all the difference.

Call now, while your representatives are home this week. And tell your friends to call too. Even if they don't have the same lawmakers, every member of the House and Senate will soon vote on the final bill, so everyone can help make it a good bill.

Sincerely,

Jean Halloran
